It is often the household task that we constantly push back: defrost the freezer. However, this is necessary to optimize the life of the device and to save energy …
Did you know ? A simple layer of 3 mm of frost causes a freezer to increase its electrical consumption by 30 to 40%. In addition, the frost causes your device to work more to maintain a negative temperature inside the cabin, which wears it out faster. Good reasons to defrost your freezer without further delay.
Defrosting your freezer: little tips for big savings!
And if defrosting your freezer is a long and thankless task for you, it will become less and less if you do it regularly.
First thing to do when you defrost your freezer : empty it . In winter , you can store your food outside, provided the temperatures are negative, of course. Otherwise, bring coolers. Once emptied, switch off the freezer or put it in standby mode.
Do not forget to place a mop and a basin at the bottom of your freezer, because the water will flow!
Tips for removing frost and ice faster
Is your freezer covered with a more or less significant layer of frost that you want to get rid of?
If you regularly maintain your freezer and the layer of frost is not too thick , choose one of these two solutions:
- The gentle method: pour boiling water into a spray bottle and spray on the walls. Rub gradually, the frost will melt under the effect of heat.
- The accelerated method: boil water . When the water is at temperature, place the pan directly (on a trivet) in the freezer and close the door for 15 min. The water vapors will detach the ice more quickly.
If the layer of ice is really large (more than 1 cm) , as in the accelerated method described above, place a pan of boiling water and close the freezer (unplugged of course). Leave to act for ten minutes then start to detach from the ice by sliding a spatula, ideally made of wood, between the wall and the frozen block. It should come off in large pieces, easy to recover, which avoids flooding…
Never use sharp or sharp knives or instruments to peel off the pieces of ice : you risk puncturing the wall and rendering your equipment unusable.
Remember to collect the water from the defrost and the ice cubes for reuse in plants or in the garden, or even in the iron.
Defrost, but not only! Wall cleaning
All the ice is removed and you are about to restart your freezer? Stop! Just because your freezer is defrosted doesn’t mean it’s clean!
Mix one volume of white vinegar and one volume of lemon juice with 3 volumes of water . Use this mixture to clean the walls of your device, eliminate bacteria present and deodorize your device. Do not rinse, but dry properly to prevent frost from coming back too quickly .
Do not forget to also clean the joints, real nests for bacteria . Take the opportunity to check their tightness and replace them if they are worn.
If you want to facilitate your next defrost, you can apply a plastic film in your freezer , which you will only have to remove.
All you have to do is turn your freezer back on and put the food back in, making sure they are all perfectly packed.
